How many children are born each year with fetal alcohol syndrome? How many people's lives are cut short due to excessive and abusive drinking? How many people get injured or lose their lives in alcohol related traffic accidents every year? How many individuals lose their lives every year because of drinking problems? How many junior high, high school, and college students lose their lives every year due to an alcohol overdose? How many people are the victims of alcohol related crime or violence each and every year? How many people face serious consequences in their lives because they received a DUI conviction? How many people die each year from a condition that is totally preventable, such as alcohol poisoning? On an annual basis, how many alcoholics fail to get the professional alcohol treatment they need?

So what is the point in asking these questions? Principally to highlight the destructive and devastating nature of hazardous and careless drinking. In fact, and based on the questions articulated above, it's a wonder why anyone would choose to drink in an irresponsible and abusive manner.

Stated more forcefully, with the host of health issues, financial problems, employment difficulties, legal proceedings, and relationship dilemmas that are interrelated with alcohol dependency and chronic alcohol abuse, why would any individual with common sense want to drink in an abusive manner? Indeed when some of the above topics are put under the microscope more closely, excessive and unhealthy drinking makes even less sense and becomes more illogical.

Wouldn't you believe that heavy drinkers would be able to see some of the alcoholism symptoms that they manifest? In a similar manner, doesn't it seem logical to think that more alcoholics would be able to perceive some of the alcoholism signs that they manifest? In addition, would you not think that individuals who are addicted to alcohol would attempt to learn more about their alcoholic symptoms by researching various alcohol-related facts, information, and statistics?

After reviewing the alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse research literature, the point is so relevant that it needs to be said again: With all of the damaging and debilitating effects that are directly or indirectly associated with continuous and repetitive alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency, why would any person want to involve himself or herself in excessive and unhealthy drinking?

What can be done about the widespread nature of alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse in the U.S.? First, society needs to get the message to more people about the destructive and unhealthy effects of abusive and unhealthy drinking. Secondly, individuals who are alcohol abusers or alcohol dependent need to look look at themselves honestly and ask why they are not receiving the quality alcohol rehab they need.

Thirdly, our students need more meaningful and more relevant educational and preventative approaches and methods so that more students at all grade levels, including those who are at college, "get the word". And fourth, our students need to learn how to become problem solvers in life rather than getting easily drawn to the "quick fix" and the "instant gratification" of a drug or alcohol abuse "buzz" or "high".

There's a lot of room for hope and optimism if individuals can start drinking responsibly and those who engage in abusive and unhealthy drinking can become motivated to get the alcohol treatment they need. Indeed, why put your loved ones through suffering, pain, and turmoil because of your abusive drinking when you have the power to control your life by drinking in moderation or even refraining from drinking if you can't control your drinking behavior?
