Ceramic Grills: The Big Green Egg Smoker Vs. Other BBQ Grills
If you're a grill enthusiast, you have most likely heard about the Big Green Egg grill. It is a ceramic barbecue grill which can be used as a grill, smoker and an outdoor oven. It is so flexible you are able to make all sorts of things from hamburgers and steaks and other standard bbq grill foods to desserts, breads and also pizza.
Eggheads can't live without the Big Green Egg, but you may be asking what makes the Egg (as it's fondly called) different from other barbecue grills.
Possibly the largest difference is the overall look of the grill. The Big Green Egg smoker is well, green and the same shape as an egg. Though I can't say the reason why it is green, I will point out that the egg shape was created (on purpose) to produce the means to control and retain heat in the grill a lot better than other grills.
The second most significant distinction is the material. Instead of being made using metal, the Big Green Egg features thick ceramic walls. Ceramic is noticeably more durable in comparison with other materials, meaning the Egg will last longer than other barbecue grills, it can be used year long (even with unusually cold temps). It is also safer, particularly when there are young children playing close by, since the ceramic material stays much cooler compared to regular metal grills plus you always cook with the lid down, which means you will not have to worry about flare-ups.
There are lots of other differences however certainly one of my favorite features is the fan club the Big Green Egg has. You will discover Egg admirers and events throughout the United States, and Eggheads are always willing to share their stories, helpful hints and recipes at events as well as on the Egghead discussion board. I can't think of another grill that has this kind of following.
I will admit, the Egg has a few disadvantages in comparison with other bbq grills. For example, it is not a cheap grill. You should expect to fork out approximately $700 for a large Big Green Egg. In addition, you should use lump wood charcoal, which is not always readily available and can be quite a bit more expensive in comparison with standard charcoal briquettes. The Big Green Egg also has a smaller grilling surface when compared with many gas grills, meaning you are going to need to have a backup grill when grilling for a number of people.
However, the overall flexibility of the Big Green Egg grill, the ability to grill, smoke or even bake with your Egg, as well as the awesome results you get (the Egg can be quite forgiving, even for inexperienced cooks) are well worth the price tag. If you're a bbq fan and you do a lot of smoking in addition to barbecuing you are going to really enjoy the quality and the results you get when cooking on the Big Green Egg.
