But the salient point for our conversation today is the fact that these internet websites in general were really difficult to find by customers looking for a supplier to meet their needs. As such, they were mostly worthless, from a purely marketing point of view.
Now if your potential customer already knew your business name, or the URL of your site, they could find you. They could perhaps check your hours, phone number or address, which was not all bad. But if they were thinking of buying a left handed pipe wrench that you actually sold, the odds were not so great. The net result is that many businesses did not draw in a lot of new customers because of their website. They needed to drive traffic to their internet sites by other types of advertising before they can potentially provide any real advantage.
I mention all this because, Times Have Changed. Sadly, many local businesses having been once burned and/or disillusioned about the value of the internet are now slow to pick up on the new reality. The new reality is that small business people need to know how to get on Google maps.
