Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the most popular co-educational high school in the state. Although she had been teaching for only five years, she had already obtained a reputation as a person with instructional techniques that motivated and encouraged the students in her class to think and to learn.

As an illustration, one Wednesday morning she addressed the pupils in her class and stated the following: "For the next three or four days we are going to learn about some usual alcoholism signs from a general standpoint and we are also going to learn about some of the most common signs of alcoholism from a less general and explicit standpoint."

"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will definitely confirm that an individual with a drinking problem is a person who is addicted to alcohol, but the more signs that a drinker exhibits, the higher the probability that he or she is an alcohol addicted person."

Miss Jackson then explained to the class that each individual would be held responsible for researching four alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her findings to the class by way of a nine minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcohol dependency signs that were discussed and presented in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked the students in her class to study the list and rank the top six alcohol dependency signs that were most indicative of alcohol addiction. After approximately fifteen minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and told the students in her classroom that after she tallies the results, she will present her findings the morning of the next school day.

Miss Jackson told her students to go over the information on the sheet of paper she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any questions, issues, or concerns. Within 40 or 50 seconds, almost everyone in the class raised her or his hand. It was clear to see that the students had some concerns, issues, or questions about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism specialists. For instance, just about every pupil disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism experts, to be precise, "Do you feel awfully ill when you abstain from drinking?"

Miss Jackson then informed the students in her class why this answer was the most accurate sign of alcoholism. She emphasized the fact that the principal difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol addiction and not with alcohol abuse.

For all intents and purposes this means that when a person who is addicted to alcohol all of a sudden quits drinking, he or she will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the relevance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the individual who is addicted to alcohol, the pupils started to recognize the basic difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency.

A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating that the end of class had arrived. Based on the enthusiasm exhibited by the pupils when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson knew that she had stimulated and encouraged the students in her classroom to stop and think about a significant social problem and health issue that exists in our country.
